Designing a Functional Home Office

Designing a Functional Home Office

Megan Deslongchamps

Since the advent of telecommuting, designing a functional workspace at home has become a must. The home office is a multitasking place where we spend several hours a day: working, surfing the Internet, doing homework, planning vacations... Some have the luxury to set their office in a separate room, while others must set it up in a shared space.

Here at South Shore Furniture, we would like to offer our best tips to help you set up a home office perfectly suited to your needs and choose furniture that combine comfort and productivity.

Our tips for increased efficiency

Whether for yourself or your child, an office must be well designed so that you can work efficiently. Because we know that academic and professional success is important to you, here are a few design suggestions for your new office which we hope will make you want to dive in and get to work!

Keep your space as tidy as can be

To maximize efficiency, the desk must be tidy and well organized. Have a pencil holder on hand to corral writing utensils as well as small containers for erasers, staples and paper clips. Everything you need should be within easy reach so that you don’t have to get up every time you need something. And try to keep the space as neat and clean as possible – you’ll be working in a distraction-free environment that’s best for thinking.

Have dedicated furniture for your paperwork

Edmon Credenza with storage - Natural Walnut

Arrange storage space nearby for papers and books, such as a bookshelf, a credenza or a file cabinet. Be sure to start by evaluating your needs and available space. Opt for books and binders so you don’t lose papers along the way or leave things lying around.

Choose the right desk for the space

Your work desk is the central element in the room. It should be neither too bulky nor too small and have all the features you need for your day-to-day work. Here are 3 types of desks to suit your situation:

The professional
Want to have the same functionalities you have in the office, but at home? The L-shaped desk from the Helsy professional range is just what you're looking for! It features an integrated charging socket and removable hutch. The credenza with file cabinet will keep your paperwork close at hand at all times.
The school kid
Your child is soon starting school and you're desperately short of space to create a homework area? The Kozack floating wall-mounted desk with metal legs is a sure bet. Fixed on the wall, it takes up very little space and blends in well with any decor!
The multitasker
Need to integrate your work area into your bedroom or living room? Don't worry, our compact desks will maximize your space to its full potential, while giving you a practical and trendy surface to work on.

Track time with a calendar

A bulletin board placed at eye level is a great place to stick important notes to remember or reference material. You may also want to set up a calendar, so you don’t lose track of various events, or to remind your child to study for that math test!

Paint your walls soft colors

Paint the walls in soft colors (such as pale yellow or a cool gray), since they make concentrating easier. More vibrant shades could be distracting.

Shop for a comfortable chair

Choose a comfortable chair so that you don’t develop back pain when working long hours. Consider an ergonomic chair whose seat and back swivel and are adjustable. Remember: Comfort always comes first!

Bring light into the room

If you can, place the desk as close to the window as possible. Natural light is preferred over artificial light as it helps you concentrate. Install a lamp with an adjustable head so that you can orient it as you would like.

Once you have everything in place, you can get to work in peace and quiet! And to maximize the time you spend working, do away with any sounds that disturb you and keep a glass of water nearby so you can stay “hydrated.”

Creating a space that you enjoy and that is comfortable will significantly increase your productivity and concentration, key requirements to do well in school and at work!
