A Zen Bedroom: Creating a Sleep Conducive Bedroom

A Zen Bedroom: Creating a Sleep Conducive Bedroom

Megan Deslongchamps

If you don’t get a good night’s sleep, the consequences can be somewhat unpleasant: a child can be tired, have problems concentrating in school and start to feel somewhat unmotivated, whereas adults can have a prickly disposition and a lack of concentration.

“Going beddy-byes” is, without a doubt, the most restful time of day! But to get to that stage, you need to have a resting space that is conducive to sleep. So here are a few bits of advice on how to create a nice sleep environment in your bedroom.

Choose the Right Location

If possible, set up your bedroom in a way that it looks out onto the backyard and where street noises are far off and muted. Also, keep it as far away as possible from the main traffic areas and any sources of noise in your home. In the same vein, position the bed so the headboard is not up against a bathroom wall or near the never-ending beep of Junior’s video console.

Keep it Orderly

Choose furniture that’s a good fit for size of the bedroom and make sure you have enough storage space to keep all your personal effects out of sight. Mates beds are ideal for smaller children's bedrooms. Their large drawers make storage easy and give you more space. Avoid cluttering up the room with unneeded accessories and furniture – leave yourself some room to breathe. Disorder and relaxation do not go together. If you’ve made every effort to keep your bedroom uncluttered but you’re still short of space, you may want to think about buying a bed with built-in storage.

Favour soothing hues

Go for soft, luminous colours. Green takes us to a place where nature is at its most soothing. Blue, the colour of the sky and water, will add a harmonious, relaxing ambiance to your room. Be careful with colours that are too bright or loud. They are best for accessories, to add a touch of cheer. If the bedroom is small, avoid painting all four walls a dark colour – your space will look even more cramped or confined. This accent colour should in fact be used to make the head of your bed stand out – you can paint the other walls white.

Opt for the Right Lighting

Avoid direct lighting and go for filtered light with notes that shimmer a little. A bedside lamp adorned with crystals calls to mind a constellation of stars, and a few small candle lamps will evoke memories of cozy evenings by the firelight. On a more practical note, install a motion-sensor light in your closet. You’ll find it highly useful for the look you want – even when the room is dark.

Surround Yourself With Cozy Materials

Surround yourself with “comforting” materials. For window coverings, choose sheers and curtains that will give your room both style and privacy. Scatter a few plush cushions on the bed and place a nice, comfortable rug on the floor. A comfy upholstered bench at the end of your bed could also promote coziness in the room. These accessories will help create a relaxing environment with the ultimate in comfort.

Ready for a good night’s sleep? Sweet dreams!
